International and national systems of adverse drug reactions monitoring - their identifying and reporting. Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are the great problem of the contemporary therapy. All medicines have the potential to cause ADRs, which are responsible for the admission to hospitals in as much as 2-6% of all cases. Furthermore, they may complicate hospital patient stay in 10-20% of patients, and therefore increase the cost of patient care. Moreover, ADRs may be responsible for deaths. It is the reason why the pharmacovigilance is such important. World Health Organization (WHO) promotes global drug safety through its International Drug Monitoring Programme, which began in the 1960s. The countries which are the Member States and WHO work together to identify possible relationships between the use of a drugs and adverse effects. Nearly 110 countries now have national systems to report ADRs. The adverse drug reactions database in Uppsala currently contains over three million reports of adverse drug reactions.
