High-perfomance liquid chromatography (HPLC) - basic elements of chromatographic system and evaluation of tea-catechins therapeutic activity using various detectors. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) has become analytical method of choice for product separation, purification, and detection, in many areas such as pharmaceuticals, biotechnology and environmental monitoring. First part of this paper contains information about HPLC technique, its theoretical basis and instrumentations. This part is mainly focused on various types of detectors, their sensitivity and utilization in analytical analysis. Second part of this paper deals with structure, and methods of catechins analyzed in teas and biological matrices with special attention to electrochemical detection as the best choice of method for HPLC analysis of these compounds. Catechins as compounds of tea infusion, consumed by 2/3 of the world's population, are worth particular interest due to numerous beneficial medicinal properties including inhibition of carcinogenesis.
