Phytochemical analysis of essential oils. Essential oils are volatile, odorous mixture consisting of low molecular mass compounds such as mono- and sesquiterpenes, phenylopropane derivatives, aliphatic and aromatic carbohydrates and their derivatives obtaining similar physical and chemical properties. The analysis of volatile oils refers to designating the identity of essential oil, its density and purity. The qualitative and quantitative investigation of a volatile oil is made possible by using chromatographic methods: TLC and GC. The quantitative determination of essential oil is mostly carried out using steam distillation method.
