2007-11-22

Significance of selected macro- and microelements for human health. In human diet, a proper consumption of mineral salts is very important. Mineral constituents can be building elements because they are present in cells and tissues in marked quantities (macroelements). Other elements are essential for the physiological equilibrium of the organism, but their levels are very small (microelements). According to the above traditional classification of the elements on the grounds of the quantitative criterion, potassium, calcium and magnesium are the most important macroelements whereas iron and manganese are the most important microelements present in the human organism. For these reasons, based on the literature survey, the detailed informations on the level of potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and manganese in the different human organs, the important physiological functions of these elements together with the disadvantageous effect on the human organism both excess and deficiency of these elements have been presented.
